In all seriousness, I don't recall there ever being this kind of excitement for a new President. This dates me, I'm sure. As far as I'm told, there was quite a bit of excitement for Reagan--but I was only two, so I can't possibly count that. Point is, everyone seems a bit happier today. I haven't talked about this with anyone--it just seems like everyone just knows, just understands that things are a little bit better. Not quite good yet, but I feel like we've got a fighting chance again.

Somehow, Seven Years Ago...

Somehow, seven years ago today, I was the epitome of America. And I mean that in a bad way. It was around 9-something in the morning and I was in the drive-thru of the Burger King near my house, gearing up for a big exciting day of school. I was an education major at the time. Which was one of the worst decisions of my life.

Anyhow, I got my two sausage biscuits with cheese, my frickin' breakfast cola, and my hash browns, and turned on the talk radio. They were talking about the "Twin Towers" burning, and I thought that they were referring to the local twin towers--the Proctor and Gamble HQ just a few miles down I-75, in downtown Cincinnati. For just a moment, I thought that perhaps all those crazy anti-corporate activists had gone and done something horrible.

Not so. This was quite a bit worse. And quite a bit bigger.

Still, there I sat, transfixed on my steering wheel as I sat in the BK parking lot, stuffing my face with processed meat and cheese listening to the world come to a close for the day. Looking back on it now, I feel like a fat American pig, the kind of fat American pig who contributes to the apparent stereotype of the "Ugly American." There's all that stuff that we have available, all that choice that we take for granted.

Did I mention that I was chewing with my mouth open? God, I'm horrible.

I still went to class, and I don't remember anything else important happening that day. How could I? When I was growing up, I'd heard adults say that they knew, and knew that everyone else knew, exactly what they were doing when they heard JFK took that rifle bullet to the noggin. It's sort of weird to know that my generation has a moment like that, as well. I would assume that every generation has one of those, right? The generation before my parents had Pearl Harbor, then JFK, and then 9/11.

Because, really, there's nothing better to talk about, especially since they were wrapping up a series with the juggernaught that is the Pittsburgh Pirates. Le Wif just exited the first trimester, and the due date is somewhere around Feb. 11 or 14. It's pretty awesome. Given my genetics, the kid'll probably be good and hairy, but hopefully not quite like this:

So, if any of you followed Le Wif and El Husbando Show, you know that back around July-August of last year I switched the operating system on my laptop from Vista to Ubuntu Linux and, well, had lots of problems. The biggest problem I had was that the wireless card that came with the computer simply WOULD NOT talk with Ubuntu.

Good news...

I'm in the process of updating to version 8.04 of Ubuntu and the craziest thing happened: Ubuntu immediately recognized my card and set it up for me. I'm writing this on my front porch, the sound of rain in my right ear, the sound of my neighbor's air conditioner in my left. This whole switch turned out to be a good idea after all. It only took a year, I guess.

Got one of those Pen 15 emails in the ol' spam folder today, and I gotta say, I had no idea that my wang's software was out of date. Here's the subject line: "Update Your Penis."

Nice.

I reckon it could be a reference to software, or perhaps the decor of the wedding tackle, right? I've always wanted racing stripes on it. You know, the kind that are off-center a little bit? It'd make the dong look faster, I suppose.

In unrelated news, I've had the phrase "I am King Kong" running through my head at random for about six weeks now. So, that's kind of weird.

In more unrelated news, I've ridden my bike 1200 miles so far this year, most of that commuting to work. At 22 miles per gallon and current gas prices (I figured @ $4 a gallon for 12 gallons per tank), I figure I've saved about $220 in gas costs alone. Add in parking and you're looking at another $390. Just over $600 for the period of time between January-June 2008, only skipping days when it's exceptionally bad outside (which is to say, too icy to drive a car on). Not to get all preachy and shit, but if you live close to your job (let's say 7 miles each way), it's dumb of you to drive to work unless that's your job.

Yep. I broke down and watched American Gladiators with Le Wif. It's amazingly nondescript, and little more than filler, apparently in wait for the end of the writers' strike. Of course, me saying that means that the show will probably stick around as long as the Internet.

I would give a full review, but I came across one that's as good as what I'd be able to write, and it's more or less the same opinion I have.

Probably because they don't deal with shapeshifting or bloodsucking. Assface.

I Love the Writers' Strike

When the writers strike first went down, I must admit that I was sort of worried about the few shows that I like stopping for an indefinite period of time. Le Wif and I had created, like so many others (probably?), television "nights" where we'd watch, eat popcorn, and generally enjoy the fruits of our sloth. Mostly, it was an excuse to take a rest from the various remodeling projects we've undertaken over the past year.

Mondays was Heroes, and sometimes Chuck, both monumental time-wasters. Thursdays, though, was the big night--we've been superficially committed to The Office, 30 Rock, and My Name is Earl through the past season-and-a-half and, despite the fact that both The Office and My Name is Earl have significantly decreased in quality in their 2007-8 seasons, we were pretty much enjoying it all. And then word of the strike began to brew.

Recently, new episodes of the great majority of television shows have stopped appearing, and with that, I assume ratings have been going down. Note that I haven't checked any numbers or reports, but this is nothing more than pure conjecture. Point is, there's nothing to watch right now. Which is probably bad for television networks, and monumentally great for the American public. And by "American public," I mean "me."

I've noticed that we've been watching less television over the last couple weeks, and that the house has been in better order. Not much better, mind you, but better nonetheless. It's crazy--I have time to do the stuff I now realize I'd rather be doing. Weird, huh? For example, last week I sent some manuscripts to agents and started reading--get this--a book. Wild shit. It's amazing what we can do when we let ourselves.

Admittedly, television has been pretty damned good for the last few years. This is, of course, my opinion, and it's probably due to the fact that folks around my age are now beginning to write television shows. Which means that I identify with it more, or find more humor in the lot of it, or whatever. It's all changing now, because of this dang strike. And I hope it never ends.

Don't get me wrong--I think that the writers should get the money they want, et cetera ad nauseum. But I'm pretty much done with being a fan of any tv shows, at least for the time being. Here's why--the networks, presumably in response to this, are bringing back all these shows that we remember from our childhoods. Because they want to tap into our nostalgia banks and tune in. All this started with movie remakes years ago.

Remakes, of course, have a rich history--but back in the day, when they used to remake a movie, they'd give it a different title or put some kind of spin on the story, in an attempt to take a classic and make it a newer, hipper, or more pleasant classic. Now, they just slap a cgi Great Dane on the screen and appeal to the 30-year-old's inner child in the previews, make them spend the 10 bucks or whatever, and don't bother to pay attention to the quality of the garbage they're putting out. In other words, they're raping our collective childhood by putting Jessica Simpson in the role of Daisy Duke and putting a live-action Speed Racer out. Ick.

Like I said, this is moving into television big-time, and you can expect it to completely ruin the reasonably good run that television's had over the last few years. Case in point: American Gladiators.

On Last.fm...

This might come as a surprise to a few people who know me, but I'm pretty sure I like music again, and it's because of last.fm. As per usual, I'm behind the times, but this is neat lil' piece of technology. If'n you haven't used it before, you register, perhaps download their desktop software, and then type in your favorite group/artist/whatever-you-call-it, and it'll play "similar artists" to what you've typed in. From there, you can rate the songs that play with either "love it" or "don't play this ever again." You can also submit comments on the songs that are playing.

Here's where the assumptions start.

I suppose that the "similar-to" feature is predicated upon how users rate music and there's some algorithm that figures out what else you might like if you like the thing you typed in. Seems to make sense, sort of like Google's directed advertising or Amazon's "People who bought this also bought" feature. Here's the inherent problem: people who like Fugazi apparently have HORRIBLE taste in music. Here's a quick sampling of the songs that play when I type in "Fugazi," the songs that follow, and my commentary on them.

Against Me!-"A Brief Yet Triumphant Introduction"--I know nothing about Against Me!, but I do know this: this song is boring. Also, they blow goats.

Lost Alone-"Say no to the world"--I've never heard of this band, but they sound like the Killers, if the Killers actually used a somewhat natural tone on their drums. Here's the thing--they make me want to jump off of a building.

Don Caballero-"Delivering the Groceries at 138 Beats Per Minute"--Finally a decent band, but this song takes a VERY long time to get started. But it's pretty good, and within the same universe as Fugazi, which makes me less nervous.

Yo La Tengo-"I Should Have Known Better"--I've tried to get into YLT a number of times, and was never really able to. But this tune reminds me of pretty much every other prototypical indie rock band, and I can't say I hate it. It's just kind of, "Whatever." More or less background music. You know.

Escape the Fate-"The Ransom"--I wish someone would kidnap this band for ransom. Better yet, they should be buried alive with their records so that nobody would ever have to listen to them again. Sounds like EVERYTHING ELSE on the radio right now. I'd like to escape the fate of ever having to hear their brand of PUNK (tm) ever again.

Joy Division-"Shadowplay"--This is more like what I'd expect to hear after typing in "Fugazi" and choosing to listen to "similar artists." Never really cared for Joy Division, but it's certainly not as bad as Escape the Feces, or Against Me, or (insert pseudo pop-punk band name here).

The Stooges-"Death Trip"--Finally, the first VERY GOOD song I've heard in this go 'round with last.fm. I got into The Stooges when I was about 23 or 24 (not too long ago), and think that pretty much everything they've done was great. You know Mike Watt from the Minutemen toured with them? I think he's actually in the Stooges now. Pretty cool.

Coheed and Cambria-"The Willing Well I: Fuel for the Feeding End"--This band is basically Styx, if Styx had contemporary recording equipment. The song reminds me so much of "Mr. Roboto" that it's now stuck in my head. I like "Mr. Roboto" way more than this, by the way. Other than that, this song is a completely dull song masquerading as an interesting song. Blecch.

Late of the Pier-"Broken"--I've never heard of this band before, and even though it's sort of got that 80's dancy quality that I typically hate, I actually think this is kind of good. Nothing like Fugazi, but not too bad. The keyboards at times sound very 8 bit Nintendoey. That might have something to do with it.

Scratch Acid-"Crazy Dan"--I've never had the opportunity to hear Scratch Acid before, and I've wanted to for some time. It's David Yow's first band, which is why I became interested. It's pretty good. So, check it out or something.

Circle Jerks-"Wild in the Streets"--I remember this song being old when I was in high school. It's as good as I remember it.

Television-"In World"--I think that last.fm has pegged my age.

Propaghandi-"Nation States"--Maybe not. This band sucks it big time. I'd rather get a blowjob from Newt Gingrich than ever have to hear this band again.

Emery-"In a Win/Win Situation"--Very Jesusy, very boring.

Polvo-"Lazy Comet"--This is more like what I'd expect to see w/ Fugazi as a search term. One of the few legitimately good songs I've heard. The song ambles like a fat man leaning on a shopping cart in the grocery store. And it's almost as frightening.

The Clash-"The Sound of Sinners"--As good as their self-titled record was, you can't possibly expect that their others would be nearly as good. And you'd be right. The rest of the Clash's stuff, with the possible exception of London Calling, is more or less garbage.

Mogwai-"Dial Revenge"--I got the last.fm tab in IE wet during this song, and suddenly, there are, like, 20 or so new tabs playing the exact same song. Did that reference go over well?

Rapeman-"Hated Chinee"--Steve Albini, as you might know, fucked Pac-Man.

Okay. I think my point comes across... There's no Fugazi that got played. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. This is the primarly problem that I have with last.fm--it won't play exactly what you want to hear on demand, but is rather like a radio station that is directed solely by the tastes of its listeners. And most people have terrible taste.

Not that you'd get anyone to admit that.

Batman Redux

A while ago, I asked folks to email me stories about the Cincinnati Batman. Nobody did. So, I'm going to ask again.

I've heard from several folks that there was a guy around the University Plaza/Downtown/OTR areas dressing up like Batman, jumping from one building to another, and helping people in much the same way that the comic book/movie/television character we've come to know and love. This is from the late 80's/early-to-mid 90's. Has anybody actually seen this guy? Has anybody heard one of the stories? If you have, please email me. I'm thinking about writing something on vigilantism and real-life superheroes. Or something like that.

Things are beginning to come together on the 1st floor of the house. It's comfortable-ish now, and it's amazing what new paint and pulling up carpet will do for a room. Blaise came over at about 10:30 in the morning and helped us out. He is awesome.

The "before" picture is taken through the living room/dining room doorway, but you can get a good idea of what we had to look at every time we walked through the room. The "after" photo is what we did to it. You'll notice the doorway from the "before" photo on the right. You'll also notice a cat, if you look hard enough.

I graduated with an MFA a year ago this week. It's been a busy year, and I'm still working on the same book that I was working on then. It was my thesis. Crazy.

The difference from then to now is that I know how to buy a house, sell a house, fix a toilet, kill a squirrel, seal a deck, pull up carpet, paint a room (or two), patch a hole in a house's eaves, cut a huge branch from a tree without injuring myself or someone else, and mix a good drink. I also now know how to work a cuff link, a few basic dance steps, and how to install a television receiver into a PC.

Don't know how to write a book just yet; I don't know that I'll ever know that.

I plan to learn how to make lamps this year, to make cheap gifts that people will appreciate, how to deal with a literary agent, and, hopefully, how to market a book. This is the short list.

There was another squirrel yesterday--that makes six. I'm completely tired of dipping them in water for extended amounts of time, so we've changed methods--we're now mixing rat poison in with the bait. That way, they'll be trapped, they'll die, and then I'll be able to dump 'em. Less fuss. Less water.

I sincerely hope that this works.

Anyone have any experience w/ rat poison? What can I expect? No, I didn't eat any, and I don't plan on it.

Okay. I'm totally sick of killing squirrels. Got the third on Friday, and we thought that would be it--not so. There was another around noon yesterday, and yet another this morning around eight or so. That's five, count'em, five squirrels. All this just to get a hole in our soffit patched up.

Today's squirrel was kind of a bummer; I've since had to switch to a bigger trap, which doesn't completely fit in the bucket of death. This means that I've had to scour the back yard for sticks to shove through the trap, therefore reducing the area in which the squirrels can move around (i.e., below the water line), so that I can actually kill 'em. The one from this morning spent a lot of time shoving his lil' nose through the spaces between the sticks to get breath. I had to hold them in the trap so that he wouldn't break through.

I haven't really had to watch the others die. This one, I had to keep an eye on the whole thing and it was (a) gross, (b) depressing, and (c) very interesting. A very incremental thing, drowning seems to be. There's the first bite of fear as the water is about waist high, then hope that it'll stop as the little bugger creeps higher and higher toward the top of the cage. Then there's desperation, snatching as much breath as is possible, and finally weakness and submission kicks in. He floats to the bottom of the cage, his eyes open. They were trained on me. The little fucker died staring straight at me.

I hope that this is the last one.

I dumped him in a drainage ditch and re-set the trap. Nothing this afternoon.

On a nicer note, the Bengals stomped the Raiders today.

I got another one today. Because I got home earlier than usual today, the pictures are easier to see, and therefore more disgusting.

Someone's going to hate me for this, but here's the deal: if you don't dispatch the squirrels, they'll destroy your house, and they'll come back every year to boot. We can't have that, so I'm doing this. These photos aren't necessarily intended to be entertainment alone--there should be some instructional element to this, because people get critters in their houses all the time, and they shouldn't have to pay hundreds of dollars for some company to do something simple enough for someone to do on their own. We bought a house in September. I'll post pictures at some point, but that's not what this story's about, completely.

We bought a house. There's a spot in one of the eaves that's been partially destroyed, and we knew we'd have to fix it at some point. We were about to borrow a ladder and get it done when I saw a cute lil' squirrel head poking out of the hole in the eave.

"Fuck," I thought, and called Le Wif up to check it out. The little creature bounded out of the hole, on to the roof/overhang above the back door, and hopped onto a branch and made his getaway.

I used to think squirrels were cute. Now, they're vagrant assholes that are living off of me. Anyone familiar with The Punisher? That's kind of how I feel. Except I figured that I'd take a more cerebral approach than making my house blow up.

Le Wif and I did some Internet research and figured the best way to handle the problem would be with some live traps and peanut butter. We'd then take the live trap, fill up a garbage can with water, and presto! Squirrel problem solved.

Easy enough.

So I chummed the trap for a while (for those not familiar with trapping animals, it's a term for baiting but not setting a trap, so that the animal will get used to eating there with no consequence--and that's how you get 'em), noting the squirrels' activities--they were getting to the bait in the morning or early evening. Whatever.

About a week or so later (read: this week), I started setting the trap in the evening, and then leaving it not set while Le Wif and I were at work. No squirrels.

Today, I left the trap set, and as I walked home, I knew there'd be a squirrel in it. And there was. I took off my jacket (I wore a suit to work today--a story barely too long to relate right now), dumped my bag, and went upstairs to retrieve the little fucker.

I untied the rope that I'd secured the trap to the roof with, and took the freeloading a-hole back outside, next to the garbage can. I turned the water on, waited for the can to fill up. When it was finally full, I dropped the trap in.

This is where I went wrong.

The live traps have these little wires that you place a certain way so that the trap will stay shut. I didn't think. Or bother to think. Some shit floats in water, and the rules of physics change a little when stuff gets submerged.

The wires came out of their "locked" position and the bastard hopped out of the trap, out of the garbage can, and exploded into the woods.

"Fuck," I said aloud, and then went back inside, wet, empty trap in hand. All that success for one abject failure.

If at first you don't succeed...

Kill a goddamn squirrel today.

Did anyone see the Office last night? It was hands-down the best episode I've seen. Amazing plot construction, amazing continuation of character arcs, amazing everything. Rock out, Mike Schur.

In other news, the Bengals have a huge, tough home game ahead this weekend. San Diego. Or, more accurately, LaDanian Tomlinson and his cast of amazingly good supporters. The to-do's for the Bengals haven't changed with this game.

I'll post reactions to the game. And maybe something more this weekend. Or something.

On guilt and animals

I feel horrible. We sent newcat (more commonly known as "Maude," or, as Jill has been calling her of late, "Maudezilla") to the vet's office to get her vagina deactivated. Since she (the cat) tends to be really bad with her claws, we decided to get that taken care of, as well.

We'd done all the research and known how many consider it to be totally inhumane and all that, but we did it anyway. I'm not sure we made the best decision--it doesn't matter. I feel guilty simply because the cat is really loopy from the anaesthesia still.

I feel guilty because she has to wear a cone around her neck and because she's hobbling on her front feet. Which, honestly, is sort of cute, but also sort of sad.

What makes me feel most guilty, though, is the fact that there's blood caking into her paws, where the stitches are. The lesson here? For me--I'm not going to declaw any more cats. For you--if you're human, you shouldn't declaw your cats. If you do, you should feel kinda guilty about it.

This football season is killing me, I swear.

Were it not for the two foibles in the first five minutes, the Bengals have momentum through the whole game and win it in non-dramatic fashion.

That didn't happen at all.

Baltimore looked sharp (until the 4th quarter) and the defense beat the offensive line on just about every play. Not much analysis to do here.

This one hurt, though.

I did not expect that. An exciting one, for sure, but the Bengals had these problems:

(a) No intensity until the 4th quarter.
(b) Not nearly as good against the run as they have been with Dexter Jackson in the lineup. Scary.
(c) Vick can actually pass now... who knew? Terrible. The Falcs looked better than they should have; Ron Mexico's definitely a weapon, on three fronts now--passing, running, and in the bedroom, apparently.
(d) The O-Line didn't give enough time for the receivers to get open. That said, Chad (ochenta y cinco) had a pretty good game.
(e) The Falcs' offense kept Ahmad Brooks more or less out of the game. Which is huge, because the kid is, as the Bostoners say, "Wicked awesome."

Plusses:

(a) No picks.
(b) Our boys kept it respectably close (and exciting, for that matter).
(c) Marvin Lewis took a hit on the sidelines and got up laughing.

Other than that, it was depressing. Am looking forward to the Roller Derby tonight to lift the spirits a little bit. Go Full Metal Corsets!

The first quarter-and-a-half of the game yesterday had me scared that the Bengals weren't ever going to get back to any kind of form. The whole offense seemed kind of out of sync for a while there--but that probably says an awful lot about the quality of Carolina's defense, in all honesty.

The big stories of the game, though:

Only one sack given up by the O-Line. Palmer wasn't given all that much time in the pocket through the whole game, but the fact that he was only sacked once by Carolina speaks to the decrease in the apparent communications on the line. Our boys are improving here. Nice.

The safety position on defense came up huge. Dexter Jackson came back and split time with Kaesviharn. Carolina ran a decent amount and the defense did a pretty good job of containing him. Dexter Jackson is a huge cog in the defense, and the decrease in the rush yardage is an indication of that.

Which isn't to say that Kaesviharn should be left out of the conversation. One of my brothers-in-law is, how should I say this, not a big fan of KK. But in the Bengals two most important games so far this year (Pittsburgh (for some advantage in the division) and Carolina (to snap a losing streak)), Kaesviharn has come up with two interceptions in the end zone to ice games. Huge. He gets beaten badly by good receivers fairly often, but you can count on him to come up big when you need him.

Finally, there's the play. Big play of the day, and something that the Bengals have been missing for the last couple weeks--a huge play that breaks the game. 31 yarder to 85, in a 4th and 1 situation. Amazing, ballsy call. Bordered a trick play. What it represents, though, is something more important: the offense is returning to form. They're starting to fire on all cylinders. I haven't been this happy about a football game in weeks.

The Pittsburgh victory was sweet, but this one confirms to me that we've got an elite team here in Cincinnati. Marvin, sometimes I question you. I shouldn't.

Two games in a row, the Bengals lose. Here are the two huge things I noticed this time around: horrible refs and an enormous lack of intensity.

Our boys didn't appear to play with the intensity that they needed to win the game. Of course, I'm not on the field or anything, but my general feeling watching at home was that they didn't seem to be too quick off the snap and that they generally got beat in many facets of the game (see TB's first touchdown, where KK got smoked on a short route). Two amazing plays got them about ten points.

There was absolutely no reason that Justin Smith should have gotten called for roughing the passer at the end of the game. If it weren't for that call, the Bengals win. Period.

Which isn't to say that they played well--because they didn't.

The good news? Fewer sacks, which means that the line's starting to play better AND Carson Palmer is finding receivers quicker... If there's one positive to take from the game, it's this.

But how much are we missing Chris Henry right now? Chris Perry? Rich Braham? Dexter Jackson and Brian Simmons? There are more, too, which doesn't bode well for the season.

The Bengals play Tampa Bay on Sunday, at Raymond James Stadium. I've got a few friends in Tampa--Jeff, Kevin--so, yeah. I would wager bragging rights or something like that, but there's not much of a point.

That said, though, the Bengals ended up with former Buc Dexter Jackson, which has turned out great for us (despite his injury). Here's hoping he'll get to play on Sunday. Otherwise, the ol' gentleman's vehicle (i.e., Cadillac) may have a huge day, given the pattern thus far in the season--last two games (without Dexter), the Bengals have given up something like 4 million rushing yards (it's more like 400). With Dexter, the Bengals are under 100-ish. So, yeah, there's a difference.

I'm learning technology here and there, usually by accident. I found a feature on my cellphone--one where I can send the pictures I take to an online album. I'm sure that every picturephone in existence has this feature, but I just found out that I can do this. Had I known that this feature existed, I would have taken more than two pix with my phone while we were on our honeymoon--and I don't mean adult-oriented ones, either.

Okay. I like hearing from people who are reading/checking out this little crack in the web that I've occupied. Here and there, friends leave comments and so on, and it warms my heart to see that someone's cared enough to respond to something I've posted. But lately, there have been a couple comments that were advertisements for travel websites that turn out to be dead links.

I'll make this short--if I get too many more of these, I'll be disabling comments from the weblog. Nothing makes me angrier than unsolicited advertising, no matter what it is or where it comes from. It's kind of like someone walking up behind you and putting their finger in your buttcrack--never pleasant, never welcome. Always way too intrusive.

So, yeah. If you loved me, you'd tell me not to disable the comment feature. Am I fishing for comments? Absolutely.

Bengals Win!

All is right in Cincinnati for at least a week. New England's next, and they're coming off of a loss to Denver. I'm excited to see how it unfolds.

Will we ever get Thurman back? And what are they doing driving around at 5 am? Surely they weren't on their way to practice. I don't know--I haven't read about it yet, and he was apparently arrested only 2 1/2 hours ago. So, there's that.

Anyhow, we beat the Steelers in an ugly one. The Bengals played like crap, and so did the Steelers. Difference: the Steelers played like crap a little more often than the Bengals did, and as a result, Cincinnati came up with a couple huge plays on the offensive side.

The defense, though, won the game for 'em. Five more takeaways (which, I think, makes the Bengals +5 or 6 now for the season) put us on the plus side of the turnover board and that historically has led to Bengals wins.

I can breathe now. It's nice.

This is the first in a series of user-based entries from Youtube that I've found interesting, for a variety of reasons. 55David's stuff is reasonably simple-story based work. He's clearly a beginner, but there's something in all of it that I like--perhaps the fact that it's clear that he makes the videos at home and involves his family... It's kind of cute, really.
